Jack Allshire from Lom-bardstown, who was only 18 years of age when he was among the Allied troops who came ashore in Normandy on D-Day during World War II, was post-humously presented with the Légion d’Honneur by the French govern-ment at Glasnevin Cemetery last Sunday, 13th November.
The Légion d’Honneur, France’s highest civilian award, was presented by Minister Jean-Marc Todeschini, and accepted by Jack’s widow Barbara on his behalf at a ceremony in Glasnevin Cemetery in Dublin.
Jack served with the Royal Ulster Rifles in World War II, landing on Sword Beach on D-Day, 6th June 1944. He died recently at the age of 89.
