Coláiste Treasa in Kanturk was in celebratory mood this week after winning several major prizes at the BT Young Scientist Exhibition, as well as being named Best School in the Republic of Ireland. Students Michael Sheehan and Jack Murphy, both 4th years , won the Best Group award, and were also overall runners-up for their project on ‘prey availability for hen harriers in managed farmland’, and also won a special award from the Environmental Protection Agency.
First year student Isobel Hynes achieved 2nd place in the junior individual Social and Behavioural Sciences category for her project on asthma awareness in Ireland, while TY student Conleth Aspel came third with his project ‘An investigation of the association between parenting style, well-being and academic success among teenagers’. Finally, 2nd year students Maeve O’Connor and Aoidhe Shiell were awarded group first place in the same category for their project ‘Fresh air, Friend or Foe?’, which involved the development of an app to combat rural seclusion among the Irish farming community. This pair were also presented with the Hewlett Packard Innovation4Good Award.
Coláiste Iosaef in Kil-mallock also had a winner, in the form of Alex Goodison who took a special award for his project on pocketKnow – Your Ultimate Tool for Revision, while Lloyd O’Dea, Robert Holmes and Evan O’Callaghan from John the Baptist Com-munity School in Hospital were highly commended for their project on how dancing alleviates the effects of Parkinson’s Disease. Hannah Lucey from Coláiste Chiaráin in Croom won a special award for her project, ‘How Old is the Universe?’ while Catriona and Finnian Brady-Halmschlagg were highly commended for their investigation into the effect of desalinated water on the growth of plants. Jack O’Connor and Diarmuid Curtin from Desmond College in Newcastle West were highly commended for their project, ‘Ergonomic Planter,’ and were also presented with a Science for Development Award, while Kayla McMahon from the same school took the Ei Electronics Award for the Fire Tech’ Stinguisher.’
