Limerick Athletics County Board, Limerick Sports Partnerships and Kilmallock and District AC hosted the third event of ‘Feet on the Street’ spring series at Deebert House Hotel, Kilmallock, last Sunday. This series has seen one hundred and forty people taking part so far to walk, jog or run in local communities. Those taking part in all 4 events earn the souvenir technical T-Shirt and entry is easy- just turn up, pay €3 (walk) or €5 (run) and away you go. Events are organised to encourage all fitness levels to get out and be active. Buggies are welcome on the walk. The social aspect of keeping fit forms a major part of each event with light refreshments and prize-giving after the walk/run in fantastic host venues.
The route chosen was the Kilmallock Ballyhoura Five Mile route and provided good road running with short inclines and downhill sections. Deebert House Hotel got top marks as a host venue as you would expect – manager Margaret Atalla counts Sonia O’Sullivan among her cousins and took part in running at school. Despite appalling weather earlier in the morning there was a huge turnout and the sun did shine just as the race began. According to Rosemary Ryan of Limerick Sports Partnerships “Each event has been better and better. Most importantly, anyone taking up jogging has a local outlet with these events and athletics clubs can cater to new members with meet and train sessions and Fit-4-Life memberships.”
The series finishes on Sunday April 29th with Delta Sports Dome 5 miles. Registration from 10 am. Walk starts at 10.40am, and the run at 11 am. There will be a presentation in the Delta Sports Dome.
