Confirmation that considerable funding has been outlined in the Department of Health’s 2022 Capital Plan for the development of health services in Mallow and Fermoy has been warmly welcomed by Cork East Fine Gael TD David Stanton. Under the Department of Health’s 2022 Capital Plan for the construction and equipping of healthcare facilities, a total of over €12.6 million has been earmarked for the development of two healthcare services in Mallow, while a further €4.1 million will be invested in the community hospital in Fermoy.
Funding has been approved for the provision of a new ambulance base at Mount Alvernia, at a cost of €100,000, while con-struction is well advanced at Mallow General Hospital on the €12.5 million replacement of the existing medical ward accommodation with 48 single bedrooms in two wards. St Patrick’s Community Hospital in Fermoy will also be refurbished and extended with 71 beds, as part of a €4,130,000 project.
The Capital Plan has set aside a combined total of €15.75 million for ongoing refurbishment works at Kanturk Community Hospital and St Joseph’s Community Hospital in Millstreet. Ongoing works at Kanturk include the construction of a single-storey extension to the existing building, incorporating 33-single bedrooms with en-suite facilities, treatment, dining and visitors’ rooms, plus a new ambulance base. Works at St Joseph’s Community Hospital in Millstreet involve the demolition of several on-campus structures, internal works to the existing hospital building, and the construction of an 11-bed extension incorporating ancillary catering facilities, day rooms and admin offices.
Deputy Stanton said: “I am delighted that the latest allocations under the Department of Health’s Capital Plan have seen major investment ear-marked for Mallow and Fermoy. Such investment will lead to a noticeable increase in the standard and availability of healthcare services in the north of the constituency and is just recognition of the important service that both hospitals provide for the wider communities of Mallow and Fermoy.
