A proposal for a Mallow Town Loop, as part of the Mallow to Dungarvan Greenway, was presented to the local council last Friday at Mallow Railway Station, where it is proposed that the town loop will start and finish. Sharon Cregg, President of Mallow Chamber, presented the proposal to Cllr Gearóid Murphy, Chair of Mallow-Kanturk Municipal District, and also in attendance were Cllrs Pat Hayes, James Kennedy and Liam Madden. Also in attendance were members of Mallow Development Partnership, Tidy Towns, Arts Collective and Killavullen Community.
The loop route proposal has been developed by Mallow Chamber, Mallow Development Partnership, Mallow Field Club, Mallow Arts Collective, Mallow GAA Sports Complex and Killavullen Community, and incorporates a route from Mallow Railway Station, the Bulwarks, Mallow Castle River Walk, Lovers’ Leap, GAA Complex, Oliver’s Cross, Ballyviniter Bridge, Ironmines Bridge, Lacknalooha Bridge, and back to the railway station. It is hoped to create the town loop as part of the proposed Mallow-Fermoy Greenway. Iarnród Éireann has also had an input into the town loop and Mallow-Dungarvan Greenway proposals, as the greenway would be going through former railway lines.
Mallow Development partnership has described the Mallow Town Loop as “a game-changer” in the development of the town. “This would significantly enhance Mallow as a tourism destination, with an awful lot to see and do within the loop.”
Mallow GAA Club has added its support for the loop, stating that the car park in Carrigoon has 700 spaces, and the club complex could also be used for a bike shop.
Mallow Field Club added that the proposed town loop and Mallow-Dungarven Greenway have the potential to benefit not only Mallow, but also the towns and villages in its catchment area.
