Rosie the Riveter gets an Irish make-over for Mallow mural

Mallow town has a beautiful new mural to admire after a group of Davis College students created the artwork on the back wall of Herlihy’s Centra, facing onto St James’s’ car park. The mural’s creation was supported by Mallow Arts Collective, and Cathaoirleach of Kanturk Mallow Municipal District Cllr James Kennedy launched the mural last Friday in the company of Cllr Liam Madden, and congratulated the students who created it. The Chairman of the Kanturk/Mallow Municipal District, Cllr James Kennedy, accompanied by fellow councillor Liam Madden, last Friday evening officially launched the new mural created as part of Mallow Arts Festival. The mural which is painted on the Herlihy’s Centra wall facing in to St James’s car park was created by seven pupils from Davis College, Nadia Fasuji, Lydia Ruby, Maja Uszko, Mingaile Lukosiute, Sahara Flynn. Jack Dwyer and Aisling Corrigan, working with and under the direction of local artist Edith O’Mahony.
The mural shows an Irish version of the iconic image of ‘Rosie the Riveter’, accompanied by a quote from novelist and playwright Edna O’Brien. Both Rosie and the Celtic symbol in the background are associated with female strength. Mallow Arts Collective acknowledges the assistance of committee member Maureen Flynn, Tom Griffin, manager of Herlihy’s Centra, Ronan Duggan, arts teacher at Davis College, and Cork County Council, with this project.
