2024 will mark the 18th anniversary of the closure of Mallow Sugar Factory, which operated since the 1930s and was a major employer in Mallow and North Cork, and the news this week is that the site on over 145 acres of land has gone on the market with a price tag of €2.2 million. Mallow was the last sugar company in Ireland following the closure of Carlow, and it was thought at the time that the Mallow operation would continue, but sadly it closed its gates in 2006 with the loss of over 250 jobs.
After the factory’s closure, the plant was demolished and buildings removed, and the site has been fenced off in the intervening years, but now that it’s on the market the potential for development can be seen, given that it’s in a strategic location just outside Mallow, with the local racecourse and River Blackwater adjacent to the site.
According to sellers Lisney, the property is in two main sections to the north and south of the R619 road and it is being sold as a whole or in two lots. The majority of the lands are zoned for development.
