Patrician Academy, Mallow ……………………………………………………………………………..2-11
Coláiste na Sceilge …………………………………………………………………………………………….1-10
Coláiste na Sceilge travelled to Banteer on Tuesday for a quarter-final game against the Patrician Academy in the quarter-final of the Munster Colleges Senior Football Championship (Corn Uí Mhuirí), and the Kerry outfit were confident of victory, but on an immaculate 4G surface they came up short against a superb Academy side which had four points to spare at the final whistle, 2-11 to 1-10.
The Patrician Academy had an excellent start to the game, dominating the early exchanges despite going behind early, and going into the half-time break they had a three-point lead, the Mallow goal coming from Cathal Mullins who beat the goalkeeper to a bouncing ball and fisted it to the net.
After the break the Academy knew that they could expect a fightback from the Kerry school, and for the most part they looked comfortable, but Coláiste na Sceilge are a formidable side and roared back into contention late in the game, reducing a four-point Academy lead to the minimum, but the Academy held their nerve and as the clock ticked into the red, Dylan O’Connell came up with a goal that had the mentors and supporters in raptures.
Soon after, referee Donnacha O’Callaghan blew the final whistle, and the Academy panel celebrated qualifying for the semi-final of the competition, where they will face CBS Tralee, who are managed by Kerry legend Marc Ó Sé.
Scorers for the Academy on a famous day were Cathal Mullins 1-3, Ben O’Shea 0-6, Dylan O’Connell 1-0, Alan O’Connell 0-1, Pádraig Britton 0-1.
