Last Thursday evening his-tory was made in Shana-golden when Tom Madi-gan, nephew of the late Captain Tim, turned the first sod in a project to commemorate his uncle. This project is a two dimensional venture in the ten acre park, the building of a sports centre with changing rooms, toilets etc. and the development of a walkway around the perimeter of the sports field. Present also on the evening was Cathaoirleach of Limerick County Coun-cil John Sheahan and from West Limerick Resources Shay Riordan and Eleanor McLoughlin, who are providing 75% of the total funding for this project. Chairman of Shanagolden Community Council Eamon Mullane welcomed all to this special gathering in the sports field. He ext-ended a special welcome to Ciarán and Tom from Connack Construction, Aidan Walsh of Bruce Shaw, Frank Riordan of Riordan Plant Hire and Tom Nash of Draft and Design. Eamon Mullane also mentioned the sporting organisations that currently use the playing pitches and asked for their support for the project going forward. Looking to the future, Eamon stated that there were a number of fund-raising ventures planned. In September the “Buy a Block” campaign will be launched: people will be able to buy a block for €50 and have their name recorded in the hallway of the building. On Friday 18th October a new Showband Show concert returns to the refurbished parish hall, while before Christmas, on 21st Decem-ber, the Celtic Tenors will make their final appearance of 2013 in Shanagolden parish church. Eamon Mul-lane concluded the evening by thanking the hard-working committee in the Shanagolden and District Community Council. All present then retreated to the Old Stand for light refreshments provided by Tony and Mary Roche.
