The lights will shine brightly in Newcastle West following the official switching-on this Thursday of the town’s lighting array and Christmas tree. The event, organised by Newcastle West Business Association, will take place in the Square at 5pm.
Santa will arrive in a Newcastle West fire tender, to the sound of bells and horns to herald his arrival.
A huge effort has gone into the Christmas lighting again this year and the town will be adorned by three Christmas trees, one at Churchtown, one in South Quay and a very large tree in the Square. Speaking this Tuesday, Pat O’Donovan of Newcastle West Business Association thanked all the businesses which subscribed towards the cost of the festive lighting which is set to be in the region of €15,000. “Last year we received a grant of €800 towards the lighting from Limerick County Councill,” he said. “So far this year we have got no commitment on funding from Limerick City and County Council.
“We would like to acknowledge the farmer who donated the tree and wish to thank him for his generosity and interest in the town. Such generosity is very encouraging and it helps keep voluntary organisations going. We would also like to acknowledge and thank Robert O’Connor for getting it cut down and delivered.”
