Mayor of County Cork Cllr John Paul O’Shea, who recently returned from a trade trip to China, is on the road again, this time travelling to Boston in the company of County Council CEO, Tim Lucey, Cllr Alan Coleman, and Director of Economic Development and Tourism. The primary purpose of the trip is to make initial contact with a number of key organisations and people in Boston in the area of business develop-ment and tourism. The delegation aims to raise the profile of the Cork region among business and community leaders in Boston, and to highlight the potential for international trade and tourism.
The Mayor will receive a donation of $7,500 on behalf of the three secondary schools in Mallow, Davis College, the Patrician Academy and St. Mary’s Secondary School which will each receive a donation of $2,500 from the Irish American Partnership, an organisation
founded in Ireland to organise Irish American support on behalf of job creation, education, and economic development in Ireland. The Irish American Partnership previously donated $2,000 in 2014 to Mallow Development Partnership for their work with the annual Maths and Science Fair.
A particular highlight of the visit is the chance to meet with the Mayor of Boston, Marty Walsh, and the Mayor of Cambridge, David Maher. Mayor O’Shea said that, “The proposed meetings with the Governors, trade officials and the Mayors of Boston and Cambridge will lay the foundation for development of a strong relationship between the two regions, with a particular focus on economic and tourism opportunities. I look forward to seeing this foster over the coming months”.
The Tip O’Neill connection with Mallow and the great work of his family have presented the delegation with an opportunity to visit the O’Neill Library at Boston College, and the Tip O’Neill exhibit. The delegation will also meet with family members and explore ways of reinforcing the connections.
