Buttevant are Co Junior B Hurling Championship winners following their deserved win over Iveleary at Páirc Uí Rinn on Saturday.
It marked the 17th occasion that this Co title has come to the Avondhu Division since 1984.
The winners led all through. In the first minute Jamie O’Brien placed Mark Lenahan for the opening score. Seamus Madigan and Mark Lenahan followed with points. Iveleary had their first score by Sean O’Riordan in the 8th minute. Buttevant impressed in the half backline with Jamie Whelan Chris O’Toole and John O’Neill doing well. By the 22nd minute the winners led 0-5 to 0-1. James Maguire pointed a free for the Muskerry side who added two more points by Liam Kearney and Sam Pickering as they came within a point 0-5 to 0-4. Mark Lenahan had a Buttevant point with Denis O’Sullivan pointing after good play Anthony O’Neill and Donal Ryan.
On the resumption Iveleary introduced Barry O’Leary who did well.
Both sides had a number of wides. Mark Lenahan with a free opened up a double scores lead 0-8 to 0-4. Mark Lenahan goaled after a good solo run 1-8 to 0-4. Shane O’Callaghan and Sean O’Riordan exchanged a point. By the 40th minute the winners led 1-10 to 0-6. Sean Galvin pointed for Iveleary. Buttevant replied through David Keane and Mark Lenahan (free) 1-12 to 0-7. Iveleary keeper David Dineen saved well from Shane O’Callaghan after very good play by Aaron Horgan. In the closing moments Iveleary tried very hard for a goal. Buttevant keeper Brian O’Shaughnessy and the full back line held firm in this period. James Maguire landed a point but the Avondhu side were double scores clear 1-13 to 0-8. The winners second goal came following a long range free by Chris O’Toole that was touched over the line by Donal Ryan. Both sides made a number of substitutions with Buttevant holding out for victory by an 8 point margin. After the game Noel O’Callaghan Vice Chairman Cork Co Board presented the Cup to the winning captain Kevin Lenahan.
