Cork senior footballers, having been lucky to survive in Div 2 Football League for the coming season are now in the All-Ireland quarter final. They had a point to spare over Roscommon on Saturday in Páirc Uí Chaoimh.
Ciaran Murtagh had the opening score in the first minute. Two minutes later Murtagh had a second point after good play by Niall Daly. Cork’s opening score came when Mattie Taylor and Ian Maguire worked well for Stephen Sherlock who kicked over. Diarmuid Murtagh with a free made it 0-3 to 0-1. Eoghan McSweeney combined well for Brian O’Driscoll who pointed for the Rebels. At the end of the first quarter Niall Daly placed Enda Smith for a point. A foul on Brian Stack led to a pointed free by Ciaran Murtagh 0-5 to 0-3. A five-man Cork attack was intercepted by Eoin McCormack that led to another Ciaran Murtagh point. Roscommon were now very prominent. Ciaran Murtagh added a point 0-7 to 0-3. Cork finished the half well. They won a lot of possession in midfield. Stephen Sherlock pointed a free. Good play by Luke Fahy, Killian O’Hanlon and Tommy Walsh led to a Tommy Walsh point. In injury time Cork were back very much in contention when Mattie Taylor pointed after good play by Colm O’Callaghan and Ian Maguire 0-7 to 0-6 at half time.
Rory Maguire levelled on the resumption. Conor Carroll edged Roscommon ahead from a ‘45. Good play by Chris Óg Jones led to another Rory Maguire point. Cork took the lead with the Connacht side levelling at 0-9 each. They were also deadlocked at 0-10 apiece. In the 48th minute Sean Powter placed Luke Fahy for a point. A foul on Sherlock led to the same player opening up a two-point lead 0-12 to 0-10. Darragh Cregg got a point back for the visitors. Cork missed two good goal scoring chances by Stephen Sherlock and Chris Óg Jones. Cork’s goal came at a vital stage. Sean Powter worked well for Conor Corbett who opened up a 4-point lead 1-12 to 0-11. Chris Óg Jones followed with a point. Now well on top the Rebels had scored 1-10 to just 0-4 for the ‘Rossies’ With just 5 minutes of normal time remaining Roscommon put in a huge challenge. Points by Diarmuid Murtagh (2) and Darragh Cregg had the lead down to two points 1-13 to 0-14. Two more points for Roscommon had the sides level 1-13 to 0-16. Extra time looked very likely. However, deep in stoppage time Ian Maguire kicked the winner after good play by Conor O’Callaghan, Sean Powter and Tommy Walsh. Outstanding Mallow player Mattie Taylor was named ‘man of the match’. Cork is now through to the All Ireland quarter final this Sunday against Derry.
