Croagh National School has completed a unique solar panel installation with an educational element, making it one of the first schools in Limerick to implement such a program. This project highlights the school’s commitment to sustainability and innovation.
The installation of high-efficiency rooftop solar panels is expected to generate approximately six kilowatt-hours (kWh) of clean, renewable energy annually, reducing both the school’s carbon footprint and energy costs. Croagh National School’s unique solar panel system will also serve as a live educational tool for students. With real-time data monitoring, students will monitor the system’s performance and gain hands-on learning about renewable energy, sustainability, and the science behind solar power.
The transition to solar energy is projected to significantly save the school in energy costs with the savings being redirected to enhance educational programs, extracurricular activities, and school facilities.
“We are thrilled to embrace solar energy at Croagh National School,” said Principal Mr. O’Gorman, “This project not only aligns with our commitment to sustainability but also provides an excellent real-world learning experience for our students. It’s a win-win for our school and our planet.”
“This installation marks a significant step towards our goal of becoming a greener, more sustainable school,” said Niall O’Callaghan, Chairperson of the Board of Management. “We hope to inspire other schools to invest in renewable energy solutions.”
The solar panel project at Croagh National School was made possible through a combination of grant aid from the Department of Education, and a donation from local Councillor Stephen Keary’s GMA Fund, and a partnership with Solar Choices, a leading provider of renewable energy solutions. The collaboration ensures that the system will be maintained and monitored for optimal performance for years to come.
Croagh National School is now a model of sustainability, demonstrating to students, parents, and the local community that renewable energy is a viable and responsible choice for the future.
