Charleville’s own Darragh Fitzgibbon is one of three nominees for the 2024 PwC GAA/GPA Hurler of the Year award following a stellar season with the Cork Senior Hurling team.
Darragh was instrumental to the Rebels in midfield in a year that saw Pat Ryan’s side come agonisingly close to ending their long wait for the Liam MacCarthy Cup, losing by just one point to Clare after extra time in the All-Ireland final in July.
Fitzgibbon will duke it out with Clare’s Shane O’Donnell and Kyle Hayes of Limerick for the top award, to be announced on 1st November.
Darragh has also been nominated for a Hurling All-Star, an accolade he won in 2018, as has Tim O’Mahony of Newtownshandrum. Tim was also pivotal in Cork’s journey to Croke Park and, along with Darragh, is one of 10 Cork players in total hoping to be named on that All-Star team later this year.
Limerick, meanwhile, will have 9 players up for an All-Star, with South Limerick represented by goalkeeper Nickie Quaid of Effin, hoping to pick up the award for a third time, and David Reidy of Dromin-Athlacca, aiming to win the award for the first time following his previous nomination in 2023.
In camogie, Milford’s Ashling Thompson, hoping to pick up her fourth All-Star, is one of 12 Cork players nominated.
