The founders of Monagea for CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) have been named as Limerick Person of the Month.
It was established in 2013 by Liam and Marie Herlihy and Tom and Clare Scanlon in memory of their children Niamh and Darra, who both died suddenly within a short period of each other in 2011. Over the past decade or so, Monagea for CRY has run an annual run/walk/cycle in memory of Niamh and Darra. It was traditionally held over the May Bank Holiday Weekend, and after a decade this year’s event was flagged as the final fundraiser. All events have been hugely successful and altogether in the region of €500,000 has been raised for CRY. In the case of Monagea, all monies raised went directly to CRY.
In his acceptance, Liam commented: “It’s titled the Limerick Person of the Month but, and I am sure I speak for Clare and Tom and Marie, we are accepting this on behalf of the people of Monagea who gave us huge support in the last ten years.”
Liam, along with former All-Ireland winning Kerry footballer Aidan O’Mah-ony (in memory of his brother John, Clarina, who passed away suddenly earlier this year) are currently on a chairty walk for CRY along the iconic Camino de Santiago, Spain.
The charity provides assistance to individuals and families impacted by sudden cardiac death and those living with inherited cardiac conditions.
