Eddie Dunbar claims first career Grand Tour Stage win

Banteer’s Eddie Dunbar has claimed the first Grand Tour stage win of his career at Stage 11 of La Vuelta on Wednesday afternoon.
In a phenomenal bit of ingenuity over the last kilometre, a late surge to the finish from a near-40-rider breakaway saw the 27-year-old claim victory in a time of 3.44.52, marginally ahead of Quentin Hermans of Belgium.
The win will be a major cause for celebration for the Team Jayco–AlUla rider, who has had an injury-hit few months and was forced to withdraw from the Giro d’Italia in May with an ACL injury that led to him questioning if that may be it for his cycling career. Nonetheless, the Corkman’s sense of perseverance powered through and the Corkman tasted victory in Spain yesterday.
La Vuelta a Espana continues with Stage 12 today, Thursday. Eddie currently sits in 22nd place in the general classification, with the tour now past the midway stage.
