Banteer’s Eddie Dunbar claimed his second stage victory at La Vuelta last Saturday, finishing in first place at the 20th and penultimate stage in what was the finest victory of his professional cycling career so far.
The in-form Corkman, having already won the 11th stage in what was the first Grand Tour stage win of his career, raced home at the ‘Queen Stage’ having fended off the challenge of Spain’s Enric Mas at the finish.
“This one definitely feels a bit sweeter [than Stage 11],” said Dunbar after his win. “I said it to a few people after the stage win last week that it was never the way I expected to win a Grand Tour stage.
“I always imagined winning on top of a climb, from a breakaway or the GC group. I’m just super happy that I could hold on.”
La Vuelta came to a close on Sunday, with Dunbar finishing in 30th place in the 21st and final stage. Saturday’s stage win was enough to see the 28-year-old finish in 11th place in the general classification. A stellar achievement, especially given his recent injury concerns.
