Irish transplant golfers put in an outstanding performance this week at the World Transplant Games in Perth, Australia, with Pat O’Sullivan from Mallow and Hugh Nolan from Doneraile winning gold medals in the golf pairs competition. Pat and Hugh competed in Category 1 (the lowest handicap group of those registered) and Pat described the course as “hard enough, the greens were tricky”. Both he and Hugh were keen to credit their organ donors for being the reason they were able to compete – coincidentally they were in hospital together after their kidney transplants. They are both also grateful to Mallow Golf Club and McKenna Golf Academy for their support, as well as their families and friends.
People who wish to support organ donation are encouraged to Share their Wishes with their family and keep the reminders of their decision available by carrying the organ donor card, permitting Code 115 to be included on their driver’s licence, or having the ‘digital organ donor card’ App on their smartphone. Organ Donor Cards can be requested by visiting www.ika.ie/get-a-donor-card or to your phone, by contacting the Irish Kidney Association on 01 6205 306 or Freetext the word DONOR to 50050.
