Cork County Council this week began work on the resurfacing of the Main Street of Mallow which will continue over the coming weeks, with most of the work being done at night-time.
To facilitate the works, the street will be closed between 7pm and 6am until Friday, 3rd March.
As part of the work, the hoarding in front of the site of the former Mallow Park Hotel was moved back onto the footpath, and the lifting of parklets (outdoor eating areas) is also set to take place, though several businesses have expressed anger that they will be expected to fund the cost of putting the parklets back in place.
Cllr Gearóid Murphy has said, “I am delighted to see this resurfacing happen. The condition of Mallow’s Main Street is something I have been raising for a long time and it will be great to have this done for St. Patrick’s Day.”
Commenting on calls to upgrade the town’s foot-paths as well, Cllr Murphy said that “I will continue to highlight the need for the footpaths on the Main Street to be upgraded and to tackle dereliction in the town centre.”
Other areas where resurf-acing is taking place include the Spa Road, which has been in a poor state for years, and recent incidents of vehicle tyres being damaged by potholes mean that the work is badly needed.
Work is also continuing on the Mallow to Mitchelstown road, and this is not expected to finish until July, a few months beyond its scheduled completion date.
