Medals for Ireland at Paris Olympics

Mallow’s Elaine Whyte, Gavin O’Brien and Aoife Sexton had the experience of a lifetime on Tuesday night as they cheered on Ireland’s Daniel Wiffin to win the gold medal in 800m freestyle at the Olympic Games. It was a fantastic night, and they got to meet Daniel’s twin brother Nathan who posed for a photo with the Mallow trio who were members of Mallow Swans Swimming Club and Mallow Masters for many years.

The 2024 Olympic Games got off to a wet start last Friday in Paris, but as the days have passed the Irish athletes have been doing very well indeed, with a gold medal won by swimmer Daniel Wiffen on Tuesday night, plus a bronze earlier in the week for Mona McSharry. And that’s not all, as several other athletes are in contention for medals in track and field, swimming, boxing, showjumping, cycling, golf and other sports.
Emily Lane from Mallow was on the Ireland rugby 7s team that competed well over the weekend before eventually bowing out, while Imogen Magner from Killavullen was on the Women’s Fours rowing team that finished 4th this Tuesday in the Repechage to qualify for the B Final.
Shane Sweetnam from Castlemagner will be on the Irish team in the showjumping next week, a discipline in which the country has been very successful over the years, while Banteer’s Eddie Dunbar is on the Irish cycling team that will represent his country this Saturday.
Representing Limerick is Sarah Lavin who will be competing on the track next week.
