Young Ellen Gannon (11) of Newcastle West was among those to be honoured at the Family Carer of the Year Awards, where she was named Munster Young Carer of the Year.
Ellen helps to care for her nine-year-old twin brothers Andrew and James, who are non-verbal and attend a special school. She assists with daily tasks such as bathing, toileting and cleaning, while also engaging them through play, dancing and teaching. Ellen is described as a patient and gentle soul, who is adored by her brothers.
“I love them, I care for them and I feel really happy to have received this award,” said Ellen. “I was really excited about the day, to enjoy it and really too just to meet Miriam [O’Callaghan, host].”
Despite her responsibilities, Ellen excels in sports, enjoys art, and brings joy to everyone around her.
Ellen was presented with her deserved award in Dublin’s College Green Hotel at the weekend.
The awards are now in their 17th year and celebrate the efforts of Ireland’s 500,000 family carers who provide 19 million hours of unpaid care every week. Their contribution is invaluable, supporting loved ones with additional needs, chronic illnesses, disabilities, or mental health challenges, saving the State an estimated €20 billion annually.
