West Junior B Football Championship Final at Pairc MacUaid Coolyroe

At Pairc Mac Uaidh, Coolyroe, on Sunday evening Newcastle West were crowned champions when they overcame neighbours Knockaderry in a keenly contested game with little separating the teams over the hour.
This was a great week for the Magpies’ adult teams with their seniors qualifying for the County Final on Saturday. Newcastle West had the first two points of the game from Mark O’Doherty and Gerard Cremin and Willie O’Brien had Knockaderry’s first point, Willie O’Brien in fact scored all of Knock-aderry’s 5 points in the first half. Newcastle West’s first half scorers were Mark O’Doherty 0-2, Gerard Cremin and Sean Gleeson 0-1 and this left the half time score Knockaderry 0-5 Newcastlewest 0-4. Gerard Cremin had the first point of the second half to level game at 0-5 each. Willie O’Brien had point to give Knockaderry a one point lead. In the 12th minute Mark Doherty goaled from a penalty to give the winners a two point lead. Karl Lenihan pointed for Newcastlewest after receiving a great pass from All Ireland athlete champion Gerard Cremin to give Newcastlewest a point lead. Gerard Cremin had the last score of the game for his team to secure a two part win to bring the cup to the ARRA banks. Newcastlewest scored 1-3 from play and 0-5 from frees Knockaderry scored 0-9 from frees. Newcastle West had fine displays from Seoirse Joyce, Willie Kavanagh, Karl Lenihan, Mark O’Sullivan, Mark O’Doherty, Gerard Cremin, Tony Doyle, Ronan Kelleher. Knockaderry had fine performances from Pa Murphy, Robert Hannon, Eamonn Fitzgerald, Willie O’Brien, Donnchadh O’Dea, Tom Condon and Mark O’Callaghan. At the conclusion of the game Andrew Kelleher sponsor. The Villager Castlemahon presented the Dr Jim McCarthy Cup to Newcastle West captain Gerard Cremin in the presence of Board Chairman Pat O’Donnell. The chairman congratulated the winners and runners up and thanked Andrew Kelleher sponsor, Feohanagh Castlemahon GAA Club for the use of their pitch, referee Seán Hartnett and the officials.
