St. Mary’s Secondary School mural celebrates ‘wellbeing’

On 25th to 28th November, 2024, St. Mary’s Secondary School 5th year art pupils had the wonderful opportunity to work alongside an Irish mural artist, Garreth Joyce, as part of the Creative Engagement Arts programme. Garreth Joyce has painted at many street art festivals such as Ardú, Anseo DL, and Waterford Walls, to name a few. It was a fantastic experience for the 5th year pupils to collaborate with the artist in investigating, designing and creating an idea for their school mural focusing on topics such as wellbeing and school ethos. Here the pupils got a snapshot of what is it like to work as a professional artist from development of an idea, mapping the mural out to realising a final artwork.
This project links in with the Visual Art Leaving Cert curriculum “Today’s World” providing opportunities to work alongside contemporary artists and showcase possible career paths to creative pupils. Well done to all 5th Year Art pupils! Thank you to all who provided support for this project: Creative Engagement Arts programme; St. Mary’s Secondary School Principal Mrs. Andrea Murphy, Vice Principals Ms. Sinead Luttrell and Mr. Damien Moloney; Board of Management; both art teachers Mrs. Joelle Barton and Ms. Nicole Dolan.
The 5th Year pupils are Alina Arshad, Zoe Besrat, Clódagh Cronin, Sinéad Gleeson, Dilan Gul, Helena Hoschek, Norah Jordan, Tanzina Kazi, Vyte Norbutaite, and Olivia Udeh.
