St Mary’s Secondary School in Mallow has a proud record of achievement at the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition, and last week the school was a winner on the double when two projects were winners in their categories. The winners in the Senior Chemical, Physical and Mathematical Sciences category were Lydia O’Leary-Kelleher and Sophie Creedon with an investigation into atmospheric microplastic contamination, while the Junior Chemical, Physical and Mathematical Sciences entry, an investigation into the biomechanics of heading a football, came from Katie Mae O’Neill, Anna O’Brien and Aimee Renton. Both projects won their respective categories, and a special assembly was held in the school last Monday, where Principal Yvonne Bane congratulated them for their wonderful achievement under the mentorship of teacher Rory Coote. Interestingly, it was Lydia O’Leary-Kelleher and Sophie Creedon’s second Young Scientist win, as they won the junior category last year, and the five students got a great welcome from students and teachers alike for their achievement in the national showcase for science and technology innovation.
